Bands with Animal Names

Lately I've noticed a trend in band names, which is that alot of current bands have animal names. In the 60's you had The Beatles, The Monkees, The Animals, Steppenwolf, The Turtles, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield etc., but after that animal names went out of style for a period of time. Now they are making a comeback especially in the indie music scene. You can even catch a few blogs using animals in their names.

I've made a list of all the indie bands I can think of currently using animal names, feel free to add to the list in your comments if you choose.

Cat Power //Arctic Monkeys // Animal Collective // We Are Wolves // The Eels, They Shoot Horses Don't They?// Birdmonster // The Mountain Goats // Peter and the Wolf //Elefant // Bear vs. Shark //Deerhoof // The Doves // Eagull*Seagull //Gorillaz // The Field Mice // Andrew Bird (I guess he can't really help it though) // Minus The Bear // The Octopus Project // Thunderbirds are Now! // Grizzly Bear // Atomic Kitten // Pedro the Lion // Department Of Eagles // Modest Mouse // The Reindeer Section // Super Furry Animals // Wolf Parade

From this list, it appears that the animals Wolf, Bear, and Bird are the most popular animals for band names. To make this post even more zoological (that means relating to animals for all of you who haven't yet passed fifth grade) I'm posting a few animal-titled-tracks.

MP3 Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes
MP3 The Gloria Record - The Arctic Cat
MP3 The Go! Team - Panther Dash
MP3 The Rosebuds - Blue Bird

Closing question
- What is the next band name trend going to be? If you ask me I say fruit. It's worked for Apples In Stereo, Lemonheads, The Cranberries, Appleseed Cast, and The Smashing Pumpkins. ...coming up next we have the debut single from The Cantaloupes....

Taylor...thank you for the birthday post for me. And thank you for this won-der-ful post about animals. It's probably one of my faves so far. Because I like thinking about things like that too. -Celeste

There was a comment in the SF Chronicle this past weekend proposing that the name trend for 2006 would be "Diamond." They listed a couple of bands, but the only one I can recall off the top of my head is Lavendar Diamond.
Good post. Some other bands are Toadies, Unbunny, The Wrens, Polar Goldie Cats, Sick Bees, Patrick Wolf, Virgin of the Birds, Seasick Crocodile, OXES, Flock of Seagulls, Felix Da Housecat, Doleful Lions, The Black Crowes, and so many more.

Don't forget Veritas Lux Mea's fav band, Bear vs. shark. And thanks for all the input: I tried a new look, a resurrected look if you will, seeing as how it was supposed to be different..but maybe the old way was just the best. I'll think it out. And once again, thanks.

A few names for the bands of fruits. There's California Oranges and the Fruit Bats. I guess Fruit Bats also would qualify for the list of animal names.
And don't forget Le Tigre, ska punkers Reel Big Fish, hogboy, Bloodhound Gang, The Cat Empire, Patrick Wolf, Scorpions and Polar Bear.
