Apocalypse Songs Now

I've noticed a trend in some of the music I've been listening to recently is that they have apocalyptic themes. Whether it be a celebratory rapture or a destructive end of the world, artists often will take a look at the end. I've made a list of some songs I've been listening to recently that deal with eschatology (<--look it up).

MP3
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around
This was the title track and the opening song of Johnny Cash's last album. It's a chilling look at judgment Day full of ol' fashioned fire n' brimstone. Side note: I bought Walk The Line last night and I highly recommend it to everyone.

MP3 R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It
How could you make a list of "end of the world songs" without this song? Can anyone make sense of the lyrics? Who hasn't yelled Leonard Bernstein loudly during the second verse?

MP3 Page France - Chariot
This is the most recent song I've heard on this mix and I've fallen in love with it. The lyrics are about a rapture with Jesus as a "blushing circus king" who plays the tambourine and rides a flaming chariot. That's the kind of rapture I'd like to be a part of!

MP3 U2 - Last Night On Earth [Single Version]
This might be U2's most underrated song. Fuzzy bass line, killer guitar, passionate vocals. The songs is about living destructively, like its the last night on earth.

Mp3 Muse - Apocalypse, Please
Incredible usage of piano in this song to create frantic mood. Matt Bellamy's falsetto is absolutely chilling. The end of the world is imagined here as something far too close for comfort.

MP3 Andrew Bird - Tables And Chairs
I've posted this song about a few times already in multiple formats, but it is one of those songs that must be heard. It's the climax of Bird's live shows and the album it appears on. The idea of the song is that you shouldn't worry about the end... because its going to be great! (there will be snacks, there will)

Here's a few more songs that could have just as easily been included in this mix.:

The Cure - End of the World
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha (Armchair Apocalypse)
Dave Matthews Band - When The World Ends
AC/DC - Hells Bells
The Clash - Four Horsemen
Larry Norman - I Wish We'd All Been Ready

Read
about the end. Like NBC says, The More You Know...

Buy:
Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs
Muse - Absolution
U2 - Last Night On Earth [Single]
Page France - Hello, Dear Wind
R.E.M. - Document
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around

That Johnny Cash song is probably one of my favorite songs ever.

When I saw Muse play Apocolypse Please at Temple last August I'm pretty sure I thought the room was going to explode. Amazing song.

I know you're a softy for the string quartets.

Another possible song for the list: The Four Horsemen, by Metallica (yes, back before they became the monstrosity they are now).
